What are technical
services?
This area includes physically processing materials for use in the library
(for example, covering book jackets with plastic covers and affixing
labels).
It primarily refers to the following special library tasks, which are listed
here:
Cataloging - the system by which materials are recorded for listing in a
library catalog
Classification - the system by which materials are organized in the library
(the number on the spine of a book, for example)
Circulation - the system by which materials are borrowed and returned to the
library
Automation - a computer-driven system by which materials may be catalogued
and/or circulated (checked out of) the library
