53rd Annual Conference

June 18, 2018 to June 20, 2018

 Add to Calendar

Temple Israel
477 Longwood Ave.
Boston, MA

The conference will be held June 18-20 at Temple Israel in Boston. We have reserved sleeping rooms at the Holiday Inn in Brookline, a half mile from Temple Israel. Details about transportation and travel can be found below. You can register for the conference and hotel. You will also find the Preliminary Program Schedule.

This is a special year for the Sydney Taylor awards. We are celebrating fifty years since the start of these awards. There will be a special body of work award presented at the Awards Dinner to Harold Grinspoon and PJ Library. On the Sunday previous to the conference, the SSC Division is sponsoring a special community program at the Boston Public Library (a short train ride away from the hotel). Any AJL member who is already in Boston at that time is welcome to join the event.

Our keynote speak is Dan Cohen, who was the founding executive director of the Digital Public Library of America. This online site contains a wealth of information of value to L-12 and academic librarians, as well as to lifelong learners.

We are cooperating with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research for a session entitled The Role of Individuals in Rescuing Vilna Collections. In addition, Jonathan Brent, executive director of YIVO, will make a special presentation at our Wednesday lunch to Dainius Ulpis, whose father Antanas Ulpis hid and preserved after the war books that survived the Nazi plundering of the YIVO Institute in Vilna. We are honored to partner with YIVO in this special public recognition of the courage and dedication of Antanas Ulpis.

You can see from our preliminary program the many interesting topics in our sessions. We will have an authors luncheon this year, to which we will invite childrens’ and academic authors to join us at our tables. Since this is an AJL election year, at our annual business meeting we will install our new officers and Council.

I look forward to seeing you at the conference.

There are also private shuttle bus companies that go to hotels.  There are taxi stands at the airport.  Depending on the time of day a taxi ride to the hotel will run about $40.00. Uber and Lyft are also available.

For the trip from the hotel to Temple Israel:

Board the train across the street from the hotel (known as the Green Line C Train (or the Cleveland Circle Line) , travel inbound to Kenmore Square.  Switch to the outbound Green Line  D Train (known as the Riverside Line). Take the train  two stops to Longwood station, walk up the small incline and turn left. You will be on Longwood Ave. Cross the Riverway. The Temple will be on your left. Continue a short distance on Longwood Ave. Take the first left side street. The entrance to the temple is there.

To go from Temple Israel to the hotel:
exit the temple and go right on the side road. Turn right onto Longwood Ave. Cross over the Riverway. At the next intersection, turn right and walk down a short decline to the train station.Take the train inbound two stops to Kenmore Square. Change there to a train going outbound on the  Green C Line. After the train exits the tunnel, you are only a couple of minutes from the hotel. Exit the train at St. Paul Street. The hotel entrance is right there. The trains all have maps in them to help you identify stops, and you can ask the driver to let you know when you are reaching St. Paul St. The distances on the train are small, and the rides are quick. Allowing for the hour, at most times the ride  on the train should not be more than about 15 minutes

For those of you interested in going into downtown Boston
Take the train from either the hotel or the temple downtown. Kenmore Square has a number of restaurants. For The Boston Public Library exit at  Copley Square. The Boston Garden can be accessed from Arlington St. or Park St., and for  Boston Common or the State House exit at Park Street. At Park Street you can switch to the Red Line and take it to Harvard Square.

The basic fare for a ride on the subway is $2.75 with a Charlie Ticket or cash, or $2.25 if you have a Charlie Card.  A Link Pass for one day of unlimited travel on subways and buses is $12.00.  A one week pass is $21.50. Local buses are $1.70 with a Carlie Card and $2.00 with a Charlie Ticket or cash.  You can purchase a paper Charlie Ticket at fare vending machines at regular subway stations (the airport, downtown, and the D Line of the Green Line).  There is a fare vending machine at the Longwood stop near Temple Israel. The C Line of the Green Line above ground, the line near the Holiday Inn, does not have fare vending machines. You can get a plastic Charlie Card from subway attendants at some stations and at some stores. The closest retail store to the hotel that sells Charlie Cards is Bay State Food, at 1418 Beacon Street, about a half mile from the hotel.  You can load any amount of money for One Way fares and store any pass (1-Day, 7-Day) on them.  You can add more money to the card at fare vending machines.  You may pay for a One Way trip using cash when on-board on above-ground stops on the Green line.
